Netflix Changes Subscription Plan Options To Deter Password Sharing

Netflix is eliminating password sharing with their new plan options in 2023. See if this will impact your family usage and household. Learn more about the new Netflix plans available for subscribers.

Netflix is changing the way subscribers are able to access their account to help deter password sharing. The change has been rumored for some time, but Netflix has finally released the new plan details and pricing options on their website.

The new changes will primarily impact families that do not reside at the same household (e.g. college students). It will also affect the way you access Netflix content when traveling or using mobile devices.

Netflix plan options as outlined via their Help Center

Netflix has expanded the number of plans to give subscribers more options. These include plans with advertisements, quality of video from 720p to 4K (2160p), and number of concurrent devices. While most of these options were available in prior plans, the number of devices allowed at a time will have the largest impact on Netflix subscribers.

These new plans are a push to discourage password sharing among users, primarily for those that have separate residences or are unrelated (e.g. friends). Netflix will track device IDs, IP address, and other ways to track to determine if the device is being used at the same household.

Each month Netflix subscribers will need to confirm these devices to continue using them according to their purchased plan. Those that travel or use a mobile device will have further restrictions to access their account. These subscribers will need to login and confirm the device prior to using it remotely. The full details of sharing your Netflix account are listed here.

Plans can be changed or cancelled at any time, which offers some flexibility to subscribers.

What are your thoughts on the new Netflix plans? Will it affect your family/household? Will it impact the number of Netflix subscribers positively or negatively? Share your thoughts with my readers in the comments below.
