The 2022-23 LMU Lions Men’s Basketball season is well underway with LMU having some big wins so far over high-conference opponents. Going into this season I wasn’t quite sure what to expect from this LMU squad. We had a few transfers, out-of high school players, and some solid returners, but last year was a big let down season. Now that we have had some early season success, my interest in LMU basketball has been renewed, as I’m sure it has been with other Lions fans.
So I wanted to help fans stay informed throughout the season by compiling useful resources in an easy accessible spot, my blog. My LMU season tracker will gather data from around the web to curate into one bookmarkable post.
I’ll update this blog with info like season record, opponents record, team stats, college rankings (LMU & our opponents), news, and useful links. I’ll also provide my pregame thoughts as well as give some after game commentary. It will be a work in progress as the season goes along. I hope LMU fans will find the information here useful and will stop by to see the latest. GO LIONS!

LMU vs. Nevada Wolf Pack (December 3, 2022)
LMU’s defensive second half effort proved to be the deciding factor in this victory. The Lions won because of second chance points and forcing tough shots by Nevada in the second half. It was not a great second half based on offensive points, shooting just 16.67% from three and 62.50% from the free throw line, but they managed to hold the Wolf Pack to just 13.64% from the field. Issanza had some great block shots, Leaupepe just out hustles everyone, and Cam Shelton is proving to be the leader of this team with great confidence. Both teams scored well below their season averages, but the Lions proved to be the better team in this game.

LMU vs. Bellarmine Knights (November 25, 2022)
LMU needed the first half to get warmed up as they cruised to their sixth win of the season with a strong second half performance. The Lions had 34 points from the bench, plus only 9 turnovers the entire game, which proved to be the deciding factors in the game. The Lions defense held the Bellarmine leading scorer, Peter Suder, to only 9 points. Not too much stood out in this game for me besides limited turnovers, which has been a problem for the Lions in recent years. Overall solid performance.

LMU vs. Morgan State University (November 23, 2022)
The Lions played the classic letdown game after a thrilling OT win over Wake Forest. Both seniors, Shelton and Leaupepe, stepped up big for the Lions in the second half finishing with 26 points & 29 points, respectively. Ahrens and Graham had disappointing performances. Issanza showed some good post up moves, although the Lions just need to lob a few more around the rim for him. I said in my pregame thoughts that three’s would be a factor and Morgan State finished the game at 50% from long range. The full court pressure in the first half by Morgan State was effective against LMU. They continued their pressure late in the game causing fits for LMU players. Hope the coach will work on this as this definitely is something future opponents will certainly exploit. Glad the Lions got the W! Enjoy your Thanksgiving LMU fans!
Result: Win (OT) 81-80 | Watch Game | Links: Box Score – Recap – MSU Website
Pregame Thoughts: Morgan State is a veteran guard heavy team with Malik Miller and Isaiah Burke leading the way offensively. Both played when LMU last played MSU back in 2019. I don’t see any match-up issues size-wise as long as Issanza can stay out of foul trouble. Although MSU is more efficient at shooting 3’s (37% vs. 35%), LMU is a much more high volume shooting team from 3, so could be an advantage if our 3pt % remains high. LMU is 2-3 historically against Morgan State. LMU at home will no doubt be the favorite to win this matchup.

LMU vs. Wake Forest University (November 20, 2022)
LMU came out strong in the first half shooting the 3 ball well. With a bit of a letup in the second half, LMU trailed by 8 late in the game. LMU’s defensive stops and a missed free throw by Matthew Marsh, allowed Cam Shelton’s 3 pointer to send the game to overtime. Both teams battled in OT as the point differential never breached more than 2 points. Chance Stephens helped the Lions take the lead late, which they never gave up. Wake Forest’s guard, Tyree Appleby, and LMU’s guard, Chance Stephens, lead both of their respective teams in points. This was the second time LMU won the Jamaica Classic, so I would expect an invitation back in future seasons.

LMU vs. Georgetown University (November 18, 2022)
Georgetown ended their 2021-22 season with a streak no team wishes for — 22 losses in a row. Fortunately for them, they were able to end that streak winning their first game of this season. The good news for Lions fans is that Georgetown is still a mediocre big conference team. LMU went on an unbelievable second half run to give the Lions a double digit victory. Ohio State transfer, Justin Ahrens, showed his shooters touch from downtown going 4 for 7 from the arc. He was bested by the Leaupepe who went 75% from three. Everyone from LMU made good contributions to get this win.

LMU at UC Irvine (November 15, 2022)
I don’t have a lot of thoughts on this game as I was unable to watch the game live (ESPN+ login issues). Anyway, this was the classic ‘you live by the 3 and die by the 3’ type of game. LMU shot a measly 14.3% from the arc.

LMU vs. UC Davis (November 12, 2022)
UC Davis’ Elijah Pepper is all that kept them in the game against LMU. The Lions never built a big enough lead to make me comfortable throughout the second half, but they did what they needed to win this one. Cam Shelton impressed with 40% from the field and a team high 24 points. Keli Leaupepe once again proved he can be a consistent leader this season recording a double-double with 16 points and 12 rebs.
